Chapter 21

I knew I was glowing as I walked into the restaurant with Travis by my side. I told him that we had to be as professional as possible. Even though Poppy knew that we had slept together, I didn’t want her to think that he was going to be my new boyfriend or anything serious because I knew how excited she would get.

When I spotted her standing next to the bar, I ran over to her. I tapped her on the shoulder, and she turned around with a huge smile. We hugged each other.

“Oh my gosh, you look absolutely beautiful, Molly,” Poppy said, her brown eyes genuine and warm. “I’ve missed you so much.”

“I’ve missed you, too,” I said. “You left your hair curly today,” I said, glancing at her, and she nodded.

“I’m trying not to blow it out so much.” She wrinkled her nose. “I was starting to get heat damage, and I had to cut quite a bit off last time, so…” She shrugged. “Where’s your man?”

“He’s not my man,” I hiss to her under my breath. “He’s my boss. Remember that.”

“Okay,” she said. “Whatever you say.” She grinned. “I want to hear all the details, by the way.”

“You will,” I said quickly, “but not right now because…”

“Hi,” Travis said, his deep voice booming from behind me. “I am Travis Covington. I’m Molly’s boss.”

“Hi,” Poppy said, shaking his hand and grinning. “I’m Poppy. I’m Molly’s best friend.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Poppy,” he said, giving her a warm smile.

I wondered if he was attracted to her. Poppy was one of the most gorgeous women I knew, and pretty much every guy tried to shoot his shot with her, but she was oblivious to men. Not because she wasn’t interested, but because she didn’t have that much experience. She had been so focused on her studies for such a long time that she hadn’t learned the art of flirtation. So she never knew when a man was paying special attention to her.

I looked into Travis’s face to see if he was flirting, and I was pleased to see that while he was smiling at her warmly, he didn’t have that extra glint in his eyes.

“I’ve heard so much about you,” Poppy said, “and I can’t wait to find out more.”

“I’m sad to say that I haven’t heard that much about you aside from the fact that you’re best friends with Molly. So I look forward to getting to know you, too.”

“Awesome,” she said. “Well, the maître d’ told me the table would be ready in about ten minutes. I was just about to order a drink. Do you guys want to get something as well?”

Travis nodded. “That sounds like a great idea. I think I’ll get an old-fashioned. What would you like, Molly?”

“I think I’ll get a martini. What are you getting, Poppy?”

“I was going to get a pear martini.” She grinned. “Hold the olives.”

I laughed. “Yeah. Hold the olives for me.”

Travis looked over at me in surprise. “You don’t like olives?”

“Not really.
